Ulrike Schaede is an Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at the University of California, San Diego. Her PhD is in Japanese Studies and Economics from Marburg University (Germany). She has held visiting teaching positions include the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, and Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo. Her current research interests include trade associations and government-business relationships in Japan, regulation and Japan's finanical organization, and the role of the Ministry of Finance in Japan. Publications include "The Old Boy Network and Government-Business Relationships" (Journal of Japanese Studies 21:2, 1995, pp. 293-317); "Understanding Corporate Governance in Japan: Do Classical Concepts Apply?" (Industrial and Corporate Change Vol. 3 No. 2, 1994, pp.285-323), Geldpolitik in Japan 1950-1985 (in German, Marburg 1989), and Der neue japanische Kapitalmarkt - Finanzfutures in Japan (in German, Wiesbaden 1990).
